Goldsborough Hall, built in the 1620s, is renowned for its Jacobean architecture and magnificent Robert Adam interiors. The privately owned stately home stands in its own beautifully landscaped grounds with unspoilt elevated views over its historic gardens. Built for Sir Richard Hutton, the acting Lord Chief Justice, the hall was later remodelled in the 1750s by the eminent architects Robert Adam and John Carr of York. The house came to fame in the 1920s as the former residence of HRH Princess Mary (the King’s great aunt), who lived here following her marriage to Viscount Lascelles (later the 6th earl of Harewood).
Princess Mary made her mark on the gardens. In 1922, Her Royal Highness and Viscount Lascelles planted the first tree in the Lime Tree Walk with the remaining 33 trees planted by honoured guests, including King George V and Queen Mary, while the copse of five Japanese cherry trees were given to Princess Mary as a wedding gift by the Emperor of Japan. The gardens were first shared with the public on July 4th 1928 when Princess Mary opened them as part of the newly created National Garden Scheme.

The gardens and grounds of Goldsborough Hall, a Grade II* 17th-century stately home, are open to the public on selected dates throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy a variety of attractions, including the herbaceous borders, woodland walk, glasshouse, kitchen garden, and the historic Lime Tree Walk planted by royalty in the 1920s. Refreshments are available in the Orangery.

The gardens are open on selected dates from 2 February 2025 to 31 January 2026. Tickets must be purchased in advance, and entry is not permitted without a valid ticket. Admission prices are £8.50 for adults, £5 for teens, and free for Historic Houses members with a valid membership card. Dogs are welcome.
Special Events
- Snowdrop Sundays: The gardens are open on 8 February 2026 and 22 February 2026 from 11:00 to 16:00 for viewing snowdrops. Admission is £7.50 per adult, and children enter for free. Dogs on leads are welcome.
- National Garden Scheme: The gardens open for the National Garden Scheme on 29 March 2026 (Spring Opening) and 26 July 2026 (Summer Opening) from 11:00 to 16:00. Admission is £7.50 per adult, and children enter for free. Dogs on leads are welcome.
- History Tours: Guided tours of the Hall and gardens are available on specific dates, including 18 March 2025, 23 September 2025, 14 October 2025, and 18 November 2025. Tours run from 11:00 to 14:00 and cost £24.50 per person, including cream tea.
Additional Information
Goldsborough Hall also hosts private guided tours for groups throughout the season, priced at £24.50 per person for a minimum of 10 participants. Afternoon tea and lunch guests, as well as Hall residents, can stroll the gardens at their leisure. The Hall is a private residence and may be closed for exclusive events, so availability is subject to change.

A very interesting visit to the Hall and Gardens with expert guides, followed by afternoon tea and the price was very reasonable.
Inside, the Jacobean Library is covered in 17th century oak-panelling with its elaborately painted plaster ceiling, while the Dining Room and Drawing Rooms were redesigned by Robert Adams in the 18th century and include triumphal pillars and decorative cornices. The Dining Room also houses a vast 16th century soap stone overmantle decorated with biblical scenes. A 17th century oak staircase leads up the centre of the house.
The award-winning 12-acre gardens were laid out by Princess Mary with beech-lined herbaceous borders which stretch down to the Lime Tree Walk, planted by royalty throughout the 1920s. A woodland walk during the Spring is awash with snowdrops, winter aconites and daffodils.
