Few buildings evoke such an immediate feeling of history at Tiverton Castle.

Originally built as motte & bailey castle in 1106, later rebuilt & altered down the ages. Tiverton was once the home of the medieval Earls of Devon & Princess Katherine Plantagenet. The Castle was captured by Fairfax in 1645 due to a lucky shot hitting the drawbridge chain.

Today Tiverton is a peaceful private house, with a fine collection of Civil War arms & armour, some of which can even be tried on. See the medieval loos, once cleaned out by children, interesting furniture and pictures and a beautiful garden.

Tiverton is open to the public from Easter Sunday to the end of October as well as for private tours. We also offer comfortable holiday accommodation comprising apartments and cottages.

Opening Times

Please note: The information on the Historic Houses website is advisory, but please always check the website of the house or garden you intend to visit before travelling.

Group Visits

We welcome pre‑booked group visits between 12 and 30 people at any time of year but they must be outside normal opening hours during open season, preferably on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.

In the months when the Castle is not open to the public we can be more flexible about days. Each tour is tailored to the interest of the group. Allow plenty of time for your visit to savour the history and atmosphere of this remarkable building.

There are two types of tour – one of just the medieval Castle, and the other an extended tour, which includes seeing the owners’ private house within the courtyard.
