Grade II* Elizabethan manor house set in the Shropshire hills with stunning views over Wenlock Edge. Oak-panelled reception rooms contain many interesting items including Jacobean woodwork and friezes, unique fireplaces and fascinating family heirlooms. There are also artefacts from a Roman villa excavated nearby in the nineteenth century.

The Acton family maintains the house, gardens and woodland. The basic layout of the gardens from 1807 is still represented in the lawns, ancient trees, archery ground, and Secret Rock Garden. The house is adjacent to Acton Scott Heritage Farm, as seen on Victorian Farm. The farm was the brainchild of Mr Thomas Stackhouse Acton (d 2020) and is now a registered charity. Mrs Lucy Acton (d 2019) left a comprehensive account of the history of Acton Scott Hall, the Estate and family members in the form of unpublished books. They offer a wonderful insight into the past of this tranquil and timeless gem.

Enjoy a guided tour of the house and grounds led by Francis and Alison Acton. The house tour includes part of the basement, the conservatory, Drawing room, Library and Justice Room on the ground floor. Some tours will include the Oak Room bedroom on the first floor with its Jacobean bed. The tour of the grounds includes lawns and woodland paths to the Secret Rock Garden and Hornbeam Avenue.

As well as bedrooms at Acton Scott Hall, there is a luxury glamping site and 11-bed holiday house on the estate. For bookings and details visit: https://www.actonscott.com/hall/accommodation .

“I’ve visited many historic homes before but never had such a warm welcome. We were greeted like old friends and shown round with pride, knowledge and enthusiasm by members of the family. An exceptional experience"

“A group of us booked a tour of the Hall with Invitation to View… It was marvellous. We… rate it as one of the best house visits we have done. We particularly liked being shown round by family who knew so much about the beautiful house and its recent occupants. Highly recommended!”

“A fantastic tour of a beautiful house and gardens, with lots of fascinating anecdotes and personal history from the charming hosts. Well worth a visit. Thank you!”

"We have had such a superb visit today and Alison and Francis have such a mammoth task restoring their property and grounds, that I know that every penny they receive will go to a very good cause! I have to say, having now visited at least five properties that the four visits led by the owners, striving to ensure that the property survives for subsequent generations, stand out. Their love for their home and innate knowledge of its history, weighed down by the burden of responsibility for it’s survival, give so much more authenticity and enjoyment to the tour than the one which was led by a volunteer."

Francis and Alison Acton

Current owners Francis and Alison Acton and their adult children live and work on the Estate. We manage the grounds and house with help from volunteers, friends and local experts when necessary.
