The Crooked House, Lavenham
The inspiration behind the famous nursery rhyme.
7 High St, Lavenham, Sudbury CO10 9PR
‘There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile…’ and his story started here.
Dating from 1395, The Crooked House in Lavenham sits at the heart of Britain’s best-preserved medieval village and is said to be the inspiration behind the famous nursery rhyme ‘There was a Crooked Man’. Today it is home to two Crooked Men, who share its 600-year story through immersive experiences and events.
Set in the heart of Lavenham – Britain’s best-preserved medieval village – The Crooked House was originally built as part of a large Hall House for a 14th-century wool merchant, when little Lavenham was England’s richest wool town.
Over the past six centuries, this wonderfully wonky house has seen it all – from Henry VII to Elizabeth I, John Lennon to Harry Potter.
Today, the fairytale façade of The Crooked House makes it one of the world’s most-photographed homes and an Instagram icon. Step inside to discover its story…
