Historic Houses Competition Week
Share your referral code to potentially win a case of champagne for you and the team!
5-11 October 2021
It’s competition time, here at Historic Houses, and from Tuesday 5th to Monday 11th October, we’re inviting any and all of our 1,500 member houses to compete for the prize of a case of champagne for you and your team.
The rules are simple:
Find your unique referral code from the list linked below and share it far and wide across your online and offline channels. The house with the most referrals by the end of the week will have a fabulous case of champagne sent to you and your team.

What is a referral code?
All houses have been assigned a referral code (if you can’t find yours, simply email dominic.head@historichouses.org), which is a code that a new joiner to Historic Houses uses in order to get a £5 discount on membership.
The benefit for you is that the every new membership created using your referral code gives you a £5 payment too (payable in a lump sum to you every six months). That means, the winning house from Competition Week will also benefit from the highest payment for uses of their referral code!
As it stands…
The current leading house for most referrals since Tuesday 5th October is…
Sudeley Castle
Where to share your referral code
Not sure where to share your referral code? Here are some online and offline suggestions for where you might draw in referrals:
Online
Facebook often has the most engaged audience of people who love interacting with your posts and clicking through to find out more about your activities. Here is some suggested text for sharing your code:
We’re proud to be represented by Historic Houses, an association helping to protect the UK’s irreplaceable independent heritage. They offer a membership scheme to give the public access to almost 300 historic houses and gardens across the country, and we’d love for you to join them using our unique discount code [Enter code here], which gives you £5 off membership.
By using the code, you’ll also be helping us in our own work to maintain our house and grounds, while you’ll also enjoy monthly online lectures and a fabulous quarterly magazine!
Twitter is a great place to have conversations with your supporters.
For Instagram, you don’t need to write any one post about the referral opportunity, but how about adding the following paragraph to the footer of your new posts:
We’re proud to be members of @Historic_Houses, an association supporting Britain’s independent heritage. By using our discount code, [Enter your code here], you’ll get £5 off their membership while also helping to support us! #SupportHeritage
You can also feature the referral code on Instagram Stories. This can be a single post that reads:
We’re proud to be members of @Historic_Houses
Use our code [Enter your code here] to get £5 off their membership and help support us!
#SupportHeritage
LinkedIn is perhaps one of the more under-used social media channels, but has a lot of potential to get great engagement from your supporters and people who love and work in heritage. For some suggested text, try:

Your website
Your website is perhaps the most effective place to advertise your codes, although of course we don’t want the codes to clash with your own offer, so feel free to place your code specifically in an area dedicated to mentioning the access arrangements for Historic Houses members.
Here’s some suggested text:
We are proud to be members of Historic Houses, an association supporting the protection and future of the UK’s independently owned historic houses and gardens. Use our code [Enter code here] and you’ll gain £5 off membership and free access to 300 historic houses, while helping to support us and our own work. Find out more here.
You can also see how one of our member houses have approached advertising the codes on their website here: https://www.athelhampton.com/visit
Emails and newsletters
Email footers are a great place to mention partnerships and opportunities for your supporters, and our own newsletters feature a list of Historic Houses partners who we want to support. Here is some suggested text for the footer of your newsletters:
We are proud members of Historic Houses, an association helping to protect the UK’s irreplaceable independently owned heritage. Use our code [Enter code here] to get £5 off with Historic Houses, which gives you free access to 300 of Britain’s historic houses, and also helps to support us! Offline
Leaflets
We’ve created a bespoke, customised leaflet so that your house can promote Historic Houses membership via your own unique referral code, earning you financial rewards.
You may order leaflets in quantities of 250, 500 or 1000. Please only order what you think you will need – one reason we have introduced this new system is to avoid waste.
Word of mouth
Of course, beyond any of the channels mentioned above, simply mentioning Historic Houses membership to friends, family and colleagues, together with your referral code, is an effective means of gaining referral rewards.
