Stowe House is one of Britain’s most remarkable country houses. Built in the 18th century by the influential Temple-Grenville family, it was designed to showcase wealth, power and artistic ambition on an extraordinary scale. Created by some of the leading architects, artists and craftsmen of the day, the House became renowned for its spectacular interiors and exceptional design. The surrounding gardens and landscape, now cared for by the National Trust, were created as a setting for this magnificent home.
Saved from demolition in 1922 by Stowe School, the House began a new chapter rather than facing the fate of many English country houses. Today, it remains a living building at the heart of school life while also welcoming visitors to explore its rich history and architecture.
The Stowe House Preservation Trust was established in 1997 to restore and protect this extraordinary building for future generations. Through one of the most ambitious heritage restoration projects of recent times, many of the House’s magnificent state rooms have been returned to their former glory.
