Set in the heart of the Cambridgeshire countryside, the gardens at Longstowe Hall are framed by ancient woodland and wild flowers to the East and historic parkland to the West. Lying at the natural hollow in the centre of the landscape are the three lakes. There are also two magnificent Edwardian set pieces that run up to the West and North sides of the Hall. A double herbaceous border flanked by clipped yew hedges that retain much of the original perennial planting scheme, providing a wealth of seasonal colour from tulips in the spring through to dahlias in the autumn, and the stone balustraded rose garden, fully stocked with roses, set with box and lavender hedging.
The lawns, with their specimen trees, including an outstanding cut leaf beech tree, encircle these features. There is also an abundance of wildlife in this tranquil environment throughout the mixture of habitats. Beyond the main gardens there is an opportunity to explore the Parkland, home to grazing ewes with their lambs, veteran oak trees and a serene view back to the Hall and gardens framed by the lime avenue giving another unexpected perspective to the visitor.
On open days the new Squash Court Cafe, set in the historic stable courtyard, offers a selection of locally sourced, homemade savoury dishes, cakes and select teas and coffees.
