Found in the very heart of Angus in Scotland, Glamis Castle has been the ancestral seat to the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne since 1372. Once the inspiration for William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Glamis is renowned for its rich history and famous visitors, from Mary, Queen of Scots to James V. Glamis Castle was the childhood home of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Her younger daughter, HRH Princess Margaret, was born here and was also frequent visitor during her childhood. Throughout our open season expert guides will lead visitors on their tours. Glamis Castle is currently closed for the winter season and will reopen on 20th March 2026. During the open season, the castle, gardens, and grounds will be open daily from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the last tour starting at 4:30 PM.
Special events are planned before the official reopening:
- Snowdrop Festival: Held on 14th, 15th, 21st, and 22nd February 2026, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Activities include a scenic tractor tour, snowdrop planting, and marshmallow toasting. Admission is included in the Gardens and Grounds ticket (£6.00 per adult, £3.00 per child aged 5-16, free for children under 5).
- Curry at the Castle: On 28th February 2026, enjoy an authentic curry selection in the Victorian Castle Kitchen.
- Ladies’ Floral Afternoon Tea: On 8th March 2026, featuring a floral demonstration and afternoon tea in the State Dining Room.
- Mother’s Day: On 15th March 2026, treat your mother to lunch or afternoon tea at the castle.
During the open season, visitors can enjoy guided tours of the castle, access to the gardens and grounds, and seasonal exhibitions. Ticket prices vary based on the type of access:
- Castle Tour: £19.50 for adults, £17.00 for seniors and students, £11.00 for children (5-16 years), and £65.00 for a family (2 adults and up to 3 children).
- Gardens and Grounds: £9.50 for adults, £6.00 for children (5-16 years), and £30.00 for a family during the main season (20th March to 31st October). Reduced prices apply during the winter season (1st November to 22nd December).
Additional activities include simulated game shooting, private tours, and seasonal exhibitions. The castle also offers a membership program, "Friends of Glamis," for £100 annually, providing unlimited access during the open season.
Visitors are encouraged to explore the castle's rich history, beautiful gardens, and seasonal events. Accessibility features are available, including wheelchair access to certain areas and facilities for visitors with disabilities.
