Duart Castle proudly guards the sea cliffs of the Isle of Mull, while enjoying one of the most spectacular and unique positions on the West Coast of Scotland.
Brought back from ruin in 1911, the Castle treasures 800 years of history of one of Scotland’s oldest Clans, The Macleans, and is one of the last surviving privately owned Clan Castles in Scotland.
Visit us today and explore the turbulent past of the Clan, the battles and the love stories. Stand under and admire the stone Clan Crest or enjoy the blossoming Rowan Tree in the Castle Courtyard. Explore the ancient Keep and ghostly Dungeons. Browse the magnificent Banqueting Hall and quaint Edwardian State Rooms. Walk the Battlements and lose yourself in the breathtaking view out across the Sound of Mull.
There is more to enjoy outside within the Castle grounds, including Millennium Wood and Duart Point, a promontory which can be explored on foot. Finish your visit with homegrown, homemade food in the Duart Tearoom or treat a loved one with a unique gift in the “Maclean’s of Duart” Gift Shop.

Duart Castle offers a variety of attractions and facilities for visitors. Below is a detailed summary of the opening times, admission prices, and other relevant information for 2025:
Opening Hours
The Castle, Tearoom, and Gift Shop will be open from April 1st to October 18th, 2025. Detailed opening times are as follows:
- April: Open 6 days a week (closed Thursdays) from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
- May to September: Open 7 days a week from 10:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
- October: Open 6 days a week (closed Thursdays) from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
During the winter season, from October 25th to December 21st, 2025, the Tearoom will be open on Saturdays and Sundays, serving lunches, cakes, scones, teas, and coffees. The Castle will not be accessible during these winter hours.
Outside of these hours, visitors can still access the grounds to view the exterior of the Castle and enjoy the sea views. Donations are welcome to help maintain the site.
Admission Prices
Entry to the Castle is by ticket only, with the following prices:
- Adult: £12.00
- Child (5-15 years): £5.00
- Family (2 adults + up to 3 children): £30.00
- Senior (65+ years): £11.00
- Student (16+ years): £11.00
Members of the Historic Houses association can gain free entry upon presentation of a valid membership card.
Additional Information
Dogs are welcome in the Castle grounds but are not permitted inside the Castle, Tearoom, or Shop buildings (except for assistance dogs). There is no public transport to Duart Castle from the Craignure Ferry Terminal, but it is a 3-mile walk. Limited taxi services are available on the Isle of Mull.
Facilities
The site includes a large parking area suitable for coaches and minibuses, which is free of charge. The Tearoom serves locally sourced Isle of Mull produce, with a lunch menu available from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM. The Gift Shop offers a range of Scottish-made products, including Maclean tartan items.
Events
In 2024, Duart Castle will host storytelling events featuring Scot AnSgeulaiche, a traditional clan storyteller, on July 21st, August 4th, and August 25th, from 11:15 AM to 4:15 PM.

Getting here
Isle of Mull, Argyll, PA64 6AP
The most convenient and direct ferry sails from Oban to Craignure on the Isle of Mull. The sailing from Oban takes 45 minutes to Craignure and on the return trip, this ferry connects with trains and buses on the mainland. Book your car on the ferry in advance and purchase your ticket before getting on the ferry.
You can also get to Mull from Lochaline and Kilchoan on Morvern and Ardnamurchan. No advance booking is necessary.
