“…East Anglia has some of the most delicious little moated manor houses straight out of a story book. One of my favourites belongs to Charles and Lynda Tucker at Hindringham.
The house is warm brick and cool flint and you get to it across a lovely little brick bridge. You are crossing a moat that has gone all the way round since 12th-century…
The house is Tudor, built c.1538 by a courtier who had got rich in the service of Henry VIII’s illegitimate son Henry Fitzroy. It was in decline before Gerald Gosselin from Bengeo Hall in Herts restored it in 1900.
Mrs Tucker has worked tirelessly to revitalise the gardens which are open regularly during the summer, though the house is only open for a few days. Hindringham Hall is a historic moated manor house with beautiful gardens, a medieval moat, and fishponds. Below is a detailed summary of the opening times and visitor information for the various attractions and events at Hindringham Hall.
The Gardens
The private gardens are open to visitors from 24th March to 14th October on the following days and times:
- Tuesdays: 1pm to 5pm
- Wednesdays: 10am to 2pm
- Bank Holiday Mondays: 10am to 2pm
Entrance fees are £11.50 per adult (£10.75 if purchased in advance), £2.50 per child, and £33 for a Friends Season Ticket. Members of Historic Houses can enter free of charge. Visitors are provided with a map of the gardens for self-guided tours. Refreshments are available in the tearoom, but picnics are not allowed in the gardens.
Guided Garden Tours
Guided tours of the gardens are conducted by the owner on specific dates:
- Wednesday 8th April: 2pm to 5pm
- Wednesday 10th June: 2pm to 5pm
The tours include tea and cake and cost £40 per person. Pre-booking is required.
House Tours
Guided history tours of the house, gardens, and medieval site are available on the following dates in 2026:
- Wednesday 3rd June: 2:30pm
- Wednesday 8th July: 2:30pm
- Wednesday 5th August: 2:30pm
- Wednesday 9th September: 2:30pm
Each tour lasts two hours and includes tea and cakes. Tickets are £39.50 per person, and pre-booking is essential.
Special Events
The Moving Parts Theatre Company will perform Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen on Friday 10th July 2026 at 7pm on the East Lawn. Visitors are welcome to bring a picnic.
Holiday Cottages
Holiday cottages are available for rent within the grounds of Hindringham Hall. Rentals are from Thursday to Thursday, with short breaks available in the low season.
Accessibility and Other Information
While the area around the Hall within the moat is accessible, other areas may be challenging for wheelchairs with small wheels due to gravel paths. There are no disabled toilet facilities. Registered guide and assistance dogs are permitted in the gardens, and dogs are allowed in the tearoom area.
