The Royal Crescent, an iconic symbol of Georgian architecture, was designed by the architect John Wood the Younger and built between 1767 and 1774. This sweeping crescent of 30 terraced houses is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the UK, embodying the elegance and classical proportions that define the period. The construction was commissioned by wealthy landowners and aristocrats who sought to enjoy Bath’s status as a fashionable spa town during the 18th century.

The buildings that now house The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa (No.’s 15 & 16) were originally two of these private townhouses. Today, its interiors retain elements of the original architecture, including sweeping staircases, high ceilings, and historic paintings, while seamlessly blending contemporary design to suit the tastes of today’s luxury traveller. The property’s collection of historic artwork further reflects this rich legacy, giving guests a sense of the grandeur of the past alongside the comfort of modern amenities.

In recent years, The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa has undergone extensive refurbishments, including the ongoing renewal of rooms and suites and a complete redesign of the restaurant and bar areas—closed for three months during this transformative update—ensuring modern style without compromising its heritage.

Under the guardianship of its current family owners since 2012, it is managed with great care and respect for its historic character, offering a unique combination of history, elegance, and exceptional service in one of Bath’s most iconic settings.
