This authentically restored miner’s cottage is the birthplace of world renowned Nottinghamshire author D.H. Lawrence. Visitors can experience the humble beginnings of the controversial writer who scandalised the literary establishment.
In each room there is meticulous attention to the style of the period, so that it really does transport the visitor back in time. From the parlour to the attic, everything appears just as it would have been in a Victorian household.
The museum is also your starting point to explore the beautiful surrounding countryside, which inspired so much of Lawrence’s work, and the D.H. Lawrence Trail; an urban walk taking you by other points of interest relating to Lawrence.
General admission is self-led but guided tours can be pre-arranged. If you want a guided tour please pre-book via phone or email. There is a charge for the guided tour but Historic Houses members are eligible for the discounted rate of £5 per person.
Important information: opening info is generated by artificial intelligence; check specific attraction details before travelling.

We are a popular destination for many book clubs, special interest groups, and a tour can be tailored to your group’s requirements and interests.
We welcome school visits to this perfectly restored Victorian home, and a visit to the D.H. Lawrence Birthplace is a fascinating way for children to engage with a variety of learning topics, while having a fun day out.
For key stage 1+2 children the tour of the Birthplace Museum is complemented by a choice of activity sessions including:
- Wash day! Do the laundry Victorian style in our interactive wash-house.
- Rag-rug making! The thrifty craft which is always a favourite with children.
- The tea party! Role play, fine china and fairy cakes.
- History detectives! A chance to get hands on with our mystery artefacts.
The focus for this age group is social history but tours incorporate cross-curricula study including English, Citizenship, Art and Design and more.
For key stage 3+4 children educational visits still give an insight into what life was like in a typical late Victorian working-class home but the experienced guides also talk about D.H. Lawrence’s formative years. This is particularly useful for introducing children to literature in context.
