After the Duke of Wellington’s victory against Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the Duke chose Stratfield Saye as his country estate.

The house contains many of the 1st Duke’s possessions and is still occupied by his descendants, being a family home rather than a museum.

You can visit the grave of the 1st Duke’s warhorse; Copenhagen and the 1st Duke’s funeral carriage.

Opening Times and Events at Stratfield Saye House and Wellington Estate

Stratfield Saye House will be open to visitors on the following dates in 2026:

  • 2nd to 6th April
  • 6th to 31st August

During these dates, guided tours of the house are available at the following times:

  • 10:15am
  • 11:15am
  • 12:15pm
  • 1:15pm
  • 2:15pm
  • 3:15pm

Each tour lasts approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. Visitors are welcome to explore the grounds and museum before or after their tour. The gates open at 9:45am and close at 5:00pm.

Admission Prices:

  • Adults (16+): £14.00 on weekdays, £15.00 on weekends and public holidays
  • Over 60s/Students: £13.00 on weekdays, £14.00 on weekends and public holidays
  • Children (5-15): £5.00 on weekdays, £6.00 on weekends and public holidays
  • Garden Ticket: £5.00 (same price on all days)

House Tour tickets include access to the grounds until 5:00pm. Garden Tickets allow access to the grounds from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

All tours must be pre-booked, and a maximum of 10 people are allowed per tour slot. The downstairs of the house is wheelchair accessible, but the upstairs is only partially included in the tour.

  • Wellington International Horse Trials and Country Fair: 29th August to 31st August
  • Hallo’Welly’Ween: 23rd October to 31st October
  • Autumn Adult Camp: 24th October to 25th October
