Lissanoure Castle is situated at the foot of the Glens of Antrim and is on an island site in the heart of a private family demesne owned by Peter and Emily Mackie. It is surrounded by ornamental canals, lakes and parkland.
It was built in 1770 by George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney. He was a British statesman, colonial administrator and diplomat, most famously being the first British Ambassador to China.
The castle is situated on the site of an earlier castle built by Sir Philip Savage in the 14th-century. The main part of the castle was destroyed by a massive explosion in 1847. The courtyard remains with an impressive Tudor revival archway and clocktower entrance. The castle courtyard has been renovated into function rooms and are available to hire for weddings, parties, functions, seminars and film/photo shoots.
The castle’s scenery makes a stunning backdrop for film and photo shoots outside and there is also a very large indoor space which can be used for filming as well.
