Levens Hall is an Elizabethan mansion built around a 13th-century pele tower, the much loved home of the Bagot family.

With fine panelling, plasterwork, Cordova leather wall coverings, paintings by Rubens, Lely and Cuyp the earliest English patchwork, an important collection of Jacobean furniture and Wellingtoniana combine with other beautiful objects to form a fascinating collection.

The world-famous Topiary Gardens were laid out by Guillaume Beaumont, Gardener to King James II and Colonel James Grahme, from 1694, and his design has remained largely unchanged to this day. Over 100 individual pieces of topiary, some over nine metres high, massive beech hedges and colourful seasonal bedding provide magnificent visual impact.

Why our members love visiting Levens Hall

Levens Hall topiary

Alexa Fairclough - Visited September 2021

“The most beautiful topiary garden I have ever seen.

Set in the Cumbrian landscape, this tradional stone manor house has had a remarkable history such that this garden exists and survives. It started as a C12th defensive pele tower and evolved into a manor complete with gardens and deer park. The topiary garden is unique designed in C17th and apparently the oldest in England, it is a surprise as you can’t see it from the road or footpaths; a hidden gem. It was a wonderful day out. I could sit in this serene garden for hours reading my book in the shade of the topiary brightened by its borders.”
