Kingston Bagpuize House remains a family home. Surrounded by garden and parkland this beautiful early Georgian style house is in red brick with stone quoins, banding and window surrounds.

The entrance hall is dominated by the handsome cantilever staircase. The elegant reception rooms have period furniture and paintings.

The gardens are notable for an large collection of plants which give year round interest including snowdrops and Magnolia in spring, flowering trees and shrubs in summer and autumn colour from September. The raised terrace walk which leads the visitor to the charming 18th-century pavilion also has views towards the house and over the Woodland Garden.

The House and grounds offer exclusive use for weddings, private and corporate events and filming.

Kingston Bagpuize House and its gardens are open for the 2026 season, welcoming visitors to enjoy the early spring colors and historical charm. Below are the detailed opening times and conditions for visiting:

General Opening Times

The House and Gardens are open on specific dates from February to May 2026. The Gardens are open on the following dates:

  • February: 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25
  • March: 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30 (closed 8–9 March for filming)
  • April: 12, 13, 26, 27
  • May: 10, 11, 24, 25

The House is open on the following dates:

  • February: 15, 22
  • March: 15, 16, 22, 23, 29, 30 (closed 8–9 March for filming)
  • April: 12, 13, 26, 27
  • May: 10, 11, 24, 25

Opening hours for March are from 2pm to 5pm, with the last admission to the House at 4pm. The tearoom is open from 2pm to 4:30pm on all open days, serving tea, coffee, and homemade cakes.

Special Events

  • Snowdrop & Spring Plant Fair: 22 February 2026, 11am–2pm
  • Rare Plant Fair: 24 May 2026, 11am–4pm (Gardens open until 5pm)

During the Rare Plant Fair, the House is open from 1pm to 4pm for an additional admission fee.

Admission Prices

  • House & Gardens: £12.00 (Adult), £6.00 (Child/Student aged 12–21)
  • Gardens only: £8.00 (Adult), £4.50 (Child/Student aged 12–21)
  • Children under 12 years have free admission to the House & Gardens.

Historic Houses members visit free as part of their membership, except on Event and Charity days.

Group Visits

Group visits are available throughout the year on Monday to Thursday, with different pricing and options for morning, afternoon, and evening visits. Guided tours are available for morning and afternoon visits, and refreshments are included. Minimum group fees apply for groups of less than 20 people.

Accessibility

The grounds include various surfaces, some of which may be uneven or steep. Wheelchair access to the House is not available, but mobility scooters are permitted in the grounds. Assistance dogs are allowed.

On the eastern edge of Kingston Bagpuize village 1/2 mile south of the A420/A415 intersection.

From Oxford/ Swindon using Stagecoach bus no.66 bus. Alight at School Lane, Kingston Bagpuize – then a 10 minute walk along A415 (direction Abingdon & Millets Farm) and Rectory Lane.

Trains to Oxford from London ( Paddington Great Western and Marylebone Chiltern Railways).

The actors Dame Maggie Smith and Dame Penelope Wilton visited in 2015 and 2016 for filming when the house was a location in the Downton Abbey TV series. The both commented, as many visitors do, on the welcoming atmosphere. We hope you enjoy your visit.
