Home to the Hasell’s since 1679, Dalemain is a beautiful mixture of Mediaeval, Tudor and Georgian architecture situated in a UNESCO World Heritage Site surrounded by rugged Cumbrian Fells, rolling parkland and the ever enchanting Ullswater Lake encapsulating the best of the Lake District.
The RHS Award Winning Plantsman’s garden has been tended by the family for generations and is well known for its Mecanopsis Blue Poppies, Heritage collection of Apple Trees, and over 200 varieties of roses. Explore the Tudor Knot Garden, discover the Topiary Dragon and spend some time enjoying the glorious views across the river to the fells beyond.
The Dalemain Loop is a circular 4 mile walk which can be started at Dalemain which takes in the beautiful countryside, Dacre Village, and Pooley Bridge and is free of charge. Dogs on a lead are more than welcome on this route. Map available on our website.
Dogs on a lead are allowed in the Courtyard and Tearoom but not in the gardens. Guide dogs are allowed in the gardens.

Opening Times
The Gardens, Tearoom, and Shop: Closed for the winter and will reopen on Monday, 2nd February 2026.
The Mansion: Closed for the winter and will reopen on Sunday, 29th March 2026. Entry to the mansion is by guided tour only, with five tours available daily. Booking in advance is advisable, but tickets can also be purchased on arrival.
Admission Prices
- Garden Only: Adults £12.00, Teenagers (12-16) £10.00, Children under 12 free.
- Historic Houses Members: Free (except on special event days).
- RHS Members: Free access to the gardens during February-April and August-December.
- Gardeners World: 2-for-1 garden admission during February-April and August-December.
- Friend of Dalemain: £37 per person or £56 for a joint ticket for unlimited access to the garden, mansion, and more.
Accessibility
Dalemain offers partial disabled access. The gardens are mostly accessible, except for the Low Garden. A mobility scooter is available for booking in advance. Disabled toilets are provided.

Special Accommodation
The Bungalow: A unique self-catering property available for weekly bookings. It is located in a remote area of the Lake District and offers a rustic experience without modern amenities such as electricity or internet. Weekly bookings are available from Friday to Friday, with specific weeks open for booking in 2026 and 2027.

Historic Houses members visit for free.
Online tickets for Dalemain can be purchased on our website here: https://www.dalemain.com/tickets/. There is an option for Historic Houses tickets, which allows members to book a ticket free of charge. They will then have to show their membership card on arrival.

We offer visits to primary and secondary schools. We provide the group rate of £8.50 per person for a children-focused tour of Dalemain. The tour can be directed at a particular curriculum topic relevant to Dalemain ( e.g. Tudor, Georgian, Mediaeval, Lady Anne Clifford).

On the A592 Penrith to Ullswater. 3 miles from M6, J40 or 2 miles from Ullswater at Pooley Bridge.
Penrith Train station is approximately 3 miles from Dalemain, and is a direct train ride from London, Edinburgh and Glasgow. There are taxis available from the station.
