Visit beautiful Burghley, a magical home of magnificent State Rooms, awe-inspiring works of art and priceless treasures.

Built in the 16th Century, Burghley is the heart-felt legacy of William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I and the generations of his family who have lived here ever since, ensuring that this great House and Estate continues to thrive.

Discover the meandering Gardens full of imaginative planting, sculpture and surprises sure to delight. In the surrounding Parkland enjoy space and tranquillity amongst the fallow deer and ancient trees and take in the sweeping vistas created by the extraordinary vision of ‘Capability’ Brown.

Enjoy endless hours of outdoor fun at Hide & Secrets Adventure Play. Fun-packed woodland play zones lead to the huge Hidden Towers play structure with multi-level play including two enormous slides, climbing walls, wobbly walkways, tunnels and lookout nests.

Every great day out includes time for some good food and drink, and you’ll find plenty of delicious options on offer at Burghley. A Barista coffee on the go, a long and lazy brunch to set you up for the day or a slice of cake to keep you going, there’s something for everyone.

The House is open daily (excluding Fridays) from 16 March until 3 November 2024. Gardens and Adventure Play are open daily from 16 March until 3 November and then weekends only until 24 November 2024.

House – open Saturdays to Thursdays | 10:30am to 4:30pm (last entry at 4pm).

Gardens and Adventure Play – Open daily | 10.00am – 5pm (last entry 4.30pm) until 3 November and then 10am – 3.30pm weekends until 24 November.

Admission

Historic Houses members visit for free. To book, visit Burghley Tickets and select your visit date and time. You will then see the option to book a Historic Houses Member ticket at no charge. You’ll need to input your Historic Houses membership number, so make sure you have that to hand. Advance booking is advised.

On the day of your visit you will be required to show a valid Historic Houses membership card at the Ticket Desk for each person booked.

Historic Houses membership is not valid for free entry to the Easter Egg Treasure Hunt.

Group Visits

With its dramatic skyline and towering obelisk clock tower, Burghley was built to impress and the State Rooms are simply awe-inspiring. Discover the enormous collection of historic paintings, ceramics and works of art, many of which still stand where they were first recorded in 1688.

This amazing treasure house remains a much loved family home and we welcome groups to come and discover its fascinating history on one of our guided or self-guided tours.

Educational Visits

Educational opportunities dealing with historical, artistic, performance, literacy, mathematical and scientific themes are available all year round.

Visits can be self-led using free, supporting materials or guided by our experienced house staff and education officer, who delivers many themes in period costume.

Schools are encouraged to make their visit in period-style costume if appropriate.

Burghley is 1 mile from Stamford and 20 minutes north of Peterborough on the A1.

Burghley’s nearest station is Stamford, approximately 1 mile from the entrance. This is either a pleasant 30 minute walk taking you through the park or a short taxi ride.

There is also an hourly bus service run by Delaine which serves the outlying villages and links Peterborough to Stamford.
