Built in 1628 by the Earl of Mar, Braemar Castle has stood in the heart of Deeside for nearly four centuries. From Clan stronghold, through the Jacobite risings to a high-society retreat, explore ten rooms shaped by the colourful characters who have called Braemar Castle home.
Architecturally, Braemar Castle is a classic Scottish tower house, with a star shaped curtain wall enclosing the central keep. Over time, alterations and restorations have shaped the building visitors see today.
The ancestral home of Clan Farquharson, who played significant roles during the Jacobite uprising, the building has seen conflict, military occupation and decline, becoming a redcoat garrison following the 1715 rising. Braemar Castle’s fascinating history has been depicted in the acclaimed TV series, Outlander, bringing its dramatic interiors and authentic atmosphere to an international audience.
In 2007, when Braemar Castle was at risk of losing its unique collection and closing permanently, it entered a new chapter to become Scotland’s first community-run castle. Today it is cared for by a dedicated, highly knowledgeable team of volunteers who preserve its heritage and share its story with thousands of visitors each year.
