Step-free access is available via Bartlegarth, and the Hall is on one level. Most wheelchairs will pass through the main entrance, but larger chairs can be admitted with a ramp via the side door. Please be aware some floors are uneven due to the historic nature of the building.

Bedern Hall is a welcoming medieval refectory in the heart of York. It was formerly the home of The Vicars Choral of York Minster, and now is a Guildhall for 4 of York’s ancient Guilds. During your visit to this small hall you can:

Opening Times and Visitor Information for Bedern Hall

Bedern Hall, located in York, is a historic medieval hall with over 700 years of history. It is open to individual and group visitors on the following days and times:

  • Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM

However, the hall may occasionally close for private events. Specific closures include:

  • 16th to 22nd February 2026 (private event)
  • 11th March 2026
  • 18th March 2026
  • 20th to 22nd May 2026
  • 31st July 2026

Admission to the hall is free of charge, but donations are appreciated to support the maintenance and community services of the hall.

Cafe and Dining

The courtyard cafe and garden terrace are open on the same days as the hall:

  • Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM

The cafe offers a variety of food and beverages, including sandwiches, paninis, platters, cakes, and local drinks. Afternoon Tea is also available for £23.95 per person, featuring a selection of sandwiches, scones, cakes, and tea or coffee.

Group Visits

Group visits are welcome with a minimum of 15 and a maximum of 40 participants. A suggested donation of £3.00 per person is encouraged. Catering options are available for group visits, including seasonal soups, sandwiches, and buffets.

Nestled in the heart of York, Bedern Hall is a beautifully restored medieval hall that offers a captivating journey into the York’s medieval and more recent past. With connections to York Minster, the city’s guilds, and the medieval life of the Vicar’s Choral, the hall provides a unique and atmospheric setting for visitors to explore.

We can arrange visits for groups Tuesday to Friday. Our central location makes us an ideal venue from which to explore our City and we can help create a programme for you linking with other nearby sites, engaging a speaker or leading a guided walk.

Suggested donation of £3 per person. Minimum 15 and maximum of 30 people

We offer a range of catering options ranging from £12 to £20 per person

Bedern Hall is located in the centre of York not far from York Minster and is easily accessible on foot from Goodramgate or Kings Square

The Hall is a 10-15 minute walk from the rail station.

Our nearest car park is ‘Monkgate’ on St. Johns Street, off Lord Mayors Walk. Parking charges in York are very high. You may consider using Park and Ride services.
