With its origins in the Anglo-Saxon period, Bamburgh has dominated its volcanic outcrop and the surrounding countryside for centuries.

From its humble wooden palisade to the impressive stone walls of today it strikes an iconic pose on the Northumbrian coastline.

Open all year round it welcomes visitors to enjoy the grounds and staterooms. From the medieval kitchen to grandeur of the Victorian Kings Hall there are fourteen rooms to explore.

General Opening Hours

Bamburgh Castle is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Last admission to the castle is at 4pm. The site closes at 5pm.

Seasonal Opening

The castle is open until 8 November. Winter opening resumes on Saturday 14 November and continues through Sunday 3 January.

Areas Within the Castle

State Rooms: Last entry is at 4:15pm, with the rooms closing at 5pm as part of the general site closure.

West Ward: Last entry is at 4:30pm, with the West Ward closing at 4:45pm.

Guided Tours and Visits

Group Visits: Guided tours are available all year round, departing at 10am and lasting 45 minutes. A ten-minute introductory talk is also available at any other time during the day.

School Visits: Guided tours are available Monday to Friday during term time. Groups arriving at 10am receive a 45-minute guided tour, with a ten-minute talk available at other times. Prices are valid for Monday to Friday term time visits only.

Special Exhibitions and Events

'The Last Kingdom' TV Props and Costume Display and Tails & Tales Indoor Sculpture Trail run from 14 February to 1 November.

The Uhtred of Bebbanburg Tour is available from 14 February to 26 October.

Historic Houses members visit for free. On occasions where capacity is limited due to special events, free entry cannot be guaranteed without a booking.

Little adventurers admission (0-4yrs) – Free

Disabled admission – £3.75 with free access for carers (available from the ticket office only)

Groups rates start from 15 or more people in a group all year round.

Educational Visits

School groups of any size are welcome. Larger groups are split down into groups of 12, so please ensure you have sufficient staff.

We offer one free adult place for every twelve pupils with additional adult tickets priced at £16.75.

All pupils 5-16 are charged at £3.75.

The castle is not suitable for groups of under 5’s.

We can offer a 45 minute guided tour for groups that can arrive for 10am or a ten minute talk at any other point in the day.

We welcome familiarisation visits and we’re happy to help schools organise these in advance.

Our rates also apply to home-schooled children.

Prices are only valid during Monday – Friday during term time.

Five miles from the A1, 1 hour north of Newcastle and 1.5 hours south of Edinburgh.

Train to Berwick-upon Tweed then X18 bus to Bamburgh from outside the station.

Housed within are over 3000 artifacts ranging from porcelain plates and figurines to arms and armour. With a beautiful collection of clocks, furniture and paintings helping to maintain a homely feeling about the place.

Outside, their are battlements with incredible views out over the beaches and north towards Lindisfarne and inland towards the Cheviot hills.

The old Victorian laundry houses the Armstrong and Aviation Museum, a fascinating collection of aviation artifacts including engines, propellers and even the wreckage of a crashed Spitfire.

The summer months see an art gallery in the stables, the work of the local artist Peter Phillips, an incerdible talent who works in a variety of media to produce stunning images of the county.

The cafeteria is always on hand to refresh and refuel visitors with local produce.
