Visit West Dean Gardens (part of West Dean College of Arts and Conservation) in West Sussex and escape to a beautifully rejuvenated historic garden rich in creative and social heritage. Explore the extensive grounds on a gentle walk or venture further to the unique arboretum.

Features include the 13 restored Victorian Glasshouses housing orchids, fuchsias, figs, vines, melons and chillies. See the Walled Kitchen Garden of classic Victorian design, 100m-long Edwardian Pergola designed by Harold Peto, the naturalistic Spring Garden, the award-winning Sunken Garden and the orchards. The circular 2½ mile arboretum walk set in 50 acres of beautiful parkland offers stunning views of the South Downs and a route passing Edward James’ grave.

West Dean Gardens is a public garden located in West Sussex, open throughout the year with seasonal variations in opening hours and admission prices. The gardens feature a variety of attractions including restored Victorian Glasshouses, a Walled Kitchen Garden, an Edwardian pergola, and a 49-acre arboretum.

Opening Hours:

  • Summer (March-October): Monday-Friday: 9:30am-5pm, Saturday-Sunday and Bank Holidays: 9am-5pm.
  • Winter (January-February and November-December): Monday-Friday: 9:30am-4pm, Saturday-Sunday and Bank Holidays: 9am-4pm.
  • Closed on December 24, 25, and 31.
  • Last entry is 30 minutes before closing time.

Admission Prices:

  • Summer: Adults £13.75, Children under 16 free, Gardens Members free.
  • Winter: Adults £7.50, Children under 16 free, Gardens Members free.
  • Gift Aid options are available for an additional 10% donation.

Special Events:

  • Mother's Day (15 March 2026): Complimentary drink and daffodils for visitors.
  • Easter Activities (28 March - 12 April 2026): Family-friendly activities including trails, games, and crafts. Admission: Adults £13.75, Children £5, Gardens Members free.
  • Spring Garden Tour (25 April 2026): Guided tour of the gardens. Price: £25 per person.
