Medieval Fayre returns to Traquair

News from our houses Things to see and do

The spectacular Medieval Fayre at Traquair returns on 23rd and 24th May, offering a chance to step back in time for Scotland’s only truly authentic Medieval Fayre.

As an authentic medieval castle with over 900 years of history, there is no better venue than Traquair to host a weekend of medieval mayhem. See living history displays, archery, falconry, minstrels, and early music, as well as combat displays with knights in armour and a full scale 15th century skirmish in front of the house.

Thousands are expected to attend this colourful event with re-enactors coming from all over the UK and Europe to take part in living history demonstrations from weaponry, costume making, calligraphy, preparing weaponry, armour-making, and preparing food and drink of the time.

One of the highlights is the incredible horsemanship and jousting displays by The Knights of the North, a favourite of the Fayre for many years but always adding a new twist or surprise to their show as they gallop down the main avenue.

Up in the Old Walled Garden, visitors wander through a wealth of traders and demonstrations including willow working, rush hat making, spoon carving, a medieval forge, green woodworking, armoury, fletchers, stone carving, and medieval herbalists with special teas and potions on offer.

Children will have their imaginations fired by stepping back into medieval life and learning about day-to-day life; see a historical food demonstration, traditional crafts, get involved in making natural crowns and jester sticks, have a go at longbow archery, or go on a storytelling walk with Mistress Quill. And if they need to run off some energy there is a chance to take part in the children’s army and attack the knights – soft swords only!

There are also performances by some exciting medieval acrobats and roving minstrels, as well as musical entertainment in the Chapel; the Galloway Consort will entertain on Saturday, and enjoy a rare chance to hear the Serpent Ensemble made up of some fascinating early brass instruments on Sunday.

The day begins with a BANG as a musket is fired from the top of the 12th century tower to start the event! And if you want some more firepower there will be a live canon firing on the avenue.

And for those that like to find out about the grizzlier side of Medieval Life, the Perth executioner will be on hand to explain his instruments of torture. Watch out you are not selected for a go in the stocks!

No fayre would be complete without some delicious ale brewed exclusively for the weekend in the Traquair House Brewery, and a wealth of food offerings; a traditional a Bar-B-Q, Wood-fired pizzas, Haggis, Crepes, Ice Cream, and delicious treats from our own Old Walled Garden Café.

Included in your ticket is an opportunity to see round the house and learn about Traquair’s connection with Mary Queen of Scots and the early Scottish kings and queens.
