History, Mystery and Magic Await at Bowhill’s Shape-Shifter’s Sanctuary
This Halloween, Bowhill House & Grounds, near Selkirk, is inviting families to discover a spellbinding new outdoor adventure that’s unlike the traditional Halloween trails and pumpkin patches found elsewhere.

Launching this autumn, The Shape-Shifter’s Sanctuary is a brand-new Halloween experience inspired by the fascinating people, local legends and unusual stories hidden within Buccleuch’s own history. Rather than witches, zombies and fictional monsters, visitors will become part of an enchanting story rooted in real heritage, magical folklore and historical characters connected to the estate.
Families will embark on an interactive Halloween Trail through the grounds, stepping into the magical world of Mary Dore, a mysterious character inspired by Buccleuch heritage and historical figures. Along the way, visitors will follow clues, solve challenges and help Mary recover her lost legacy while gathering the magical firewood she needs to rebuild her cottage.
Joining the adventure is the wonderfully eccentric Duke of Montagu, an ancestor of the current Duke, whose own remarkable character helps bring this unique story to life. Together, children and families will uncover secrets, collect clues and experience Bowhill’s landscape in a completely new way.
“This year’s event is about offering something genuinely different,” said Sarah Glennie, Assistant Visitor Services Manager. “Rather than creating another traditional Halloween attraction, we’ve looked to the incredible stories, characters and heritage of Buccleuch itself. The result is an immersive family adventure that blends history, storytelling and Halloween fun in a way that’s unique to Bowhill.”
A visit to The Shape-Shifter’s Sanctuary offers a complete family day out, with a host of activities included in admission.
Every child visiting The Shape-Shifter’s Sanctuary will receive a pumpkin from the estate’s pumpkin patch to take home, while families can make the most of a full day of Halloween fun across the estate. Alongside the new heritage-inspired trail, visitors can enjoy access to Bowhill’s popular indoor soft play area and adventure playground, take part in Halloween-themed craft activities, settle in for family film screenings in the theatre, and gather around the fire for marshmallow toasting. A selection of hot dogs and seasonal treats will also be available throughout the day, ensuring there’s plenty to keep little adventurers entertained from start to finish.
Visitors can also relax in the much-loved Old Kitchen Café, serving light lunches, delicious cakes and speciality coffees throughout the day.
Following the popular success of last year’s evening event, Bowhill is extending its after-dark Trick or Treat Nights to two evenings this year, taking place on 30 and 31 October.
As darkness falls, families can experience The Shape-Shifter’s Sanctuary in a whole new light. The Halloween Trail takes on an atmospheric new feel, with visitors exploring the grounds after hours, discovering surprises and collecting treats along the way, Pizza Geeks will also be there.
The evening experience also includes access to the adventure playground after dark, creating a memorable Halloween celebration that’s exciting, immersive and family friendly.
Combining magical storytelling, real heritage, outdoor adventure and all the seasonal favourites families love, The Shape-Shifter’s Sanctuary offers a fresh alternative to the usual Halloween attractions.
Whether you’re following clues with Mary Dore, collecting your pumpkin, enjoying a family film or venturing out after dark for Trick or Treat Night, Bowhill promises a Halloween experience where history, mystery and imagination come together.
