Erkenwald Inquiries Continue with New Subsurface Surveys at Soulton Hall

News from our houses

Researchers and specialists have returned to Soulton Hall to advance a pioneering soilsmology investigation across the historic precinct grounds, shedding new light on inquiries of profound national and cultural importance.

Working collaboratively alongside the Ashton family, a multidisciplinary scientific team from Exeter University, Harper Adams University, and Earth Rover mapped an eight-meter by eight-meter sector within the central square. Invited guests were present for the survey and in attendance at the prayers. This detailed fieldwork follows expert heritage guidance from Byrga Geniht Ltd and builds directly upon initial blind testing conducted in June 2024.

The ongoing studies center on the memory of Saint Erkenwald and reflect widespread public, parliamentary, and broadcasting interest, alongside two unanimous resolutions passed by Shropshire Council. Before fieldwork commenced, participants gathered for reflection, during which John Ashton read aloud a formal prayer written earlier for the 2024 blind tests by the Right Reverend Dr Michael Ipgrave during his tenure as the ninety-ninth Bishop of Lichfield, followed by the Lord’s Prayer.

The investigation used soilsmology to record precise subsurface readings completely without ground disturbance, preserving the underlying historical layers. Upon completion, all field gear was carefully removed, single-use materials were disposed of respectfully on-site, and protective installations—such as the pyramid-shaped sculpture known as ‘Feretory’—were put back in place to safeguard the location.

The survey took place confidentially until all security and protective measures were completely back in place, with further updates anticipated as data analysis moves forward.
