Visitors to Ushaw Historic House, Chapels & Gardens are invited to step inside one of Britain’s most extraordinary historic libraries
Visitors are invited to step inside one of Britain’s most extraordinary historic libraries as Big Library marks its 175th anniversary with a special monthly experience running from July to December 2026.

Taking place on the first Friday of every month, the experience offers a rare opportunity to explore the magnificent Library at your own pace while discovering some of the remarkable treasures that have shaped its legacy over nearly two centuries.
Home to more than 50,000 volumes, the Big Library houses an internationally significant collection of rare books, early manuscripts and historic first editions. Among the highlights on display are:
- A first edition of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species
- A first edition of The Nuremberg Chronicle (1493)
- An early edition of Sir Isaac Newton’s Principia Mathematica
- The Esh Missal, a rare medieval illuminated manuscript
Alongside these iconic works, visitors will also be able to discover a changing selection of up to six books or manuscripts, refreshed each month to reveal new stories and hidden gems from the collection.
Designed as an introduction to the Big Library, the experience offers guests the freedom to enjoy the atmosphere and architecture of the space while engaging with some of its most fascinating objects.
“The Big Library is one of the most significant historic spaces in Britain” said Bethany Jackson, Head of Audiences at Ushaw. “As we celebrate 175 years of this remarkable library, it’s incredibly important to us that we continue to increase access to the space and allow visitors to encounter these extraordinary collections in a welcoming and engaging way. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to discover something new, the Library offers a truly unforgettable experience.”
For visitors seeking a more in-depth exploration, a separate 90-minute curator-led Library Experience is also available, featuring up to 20 rare books and archival highlights from the collection.
The Big Library will be open on the first Friday of the month (July to December 2026) with 30 minute timeslots between 11:30 AM and 2:15 PM. Access is included with Ushaw’s day pass or membership. Pre-booked is required. You can find out more at ushaw.org
