Ancient Voices Echo in Shropshire: A Captivating “Erkenwald” Reading at Soulton Hall
Building on the momentum of a successful conference held the previous year under the same title, history and literature converged in a truly captivating event earlier this year as Soulton Hall played host to a public reading of the enigmatic Middle English poem, “Erkenwald.”

Audiences gathered in the historic grounds, transported not just by the atmospheric setting, but by the power of an ancient text brought vividly to life by renowned voice actor Harry Frost. “Erkenwald,” a remarkable alliterative poem believed to be from the same hand as the famed “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight,” is a profound and haunting tale. It recounts the miraculous discovery of a perfectly preserved pagan judge’s body beneath St. Paul’s Cathedral in 7th-century London, and the subsequent miraculous conversation with Bishop Erkenwald.
The poem explores deep theological questions of salvation, justice, and the bridge between the ancient world and Christian faith. The connection to Shropshire runs deeper than just the venue. Remarkably, the only surviving manuscript of “Erkenwald” was discovered right here in Shropshire, having once been in the possession of Sir Humphrey Pitt, linking this foundational piece of English literature directly to the local heritage. Harry Frost’s immersive reading captivated the attendees, guiding them through the intricate language of the late 1300s. For those less familiar with Middle English, a modern translation was thoughtfully provided, ensuring everyone could follow the compelling narrative and its timeless themes.
The choice of Soulton Hall, with its own rich tapestry of history and literary ties—including its profound connections to William Shakespeare and its suspected inspiration for the ‘Forest of Arden’—created an exceptionally fitting backdrop for such a rare and significant event.
Tim Ashton of Soulton Hall emphasized the importance of the occasion: “The event offered a rare opportunity for visitors to experience the haunting beauty of Old English poetry and immerse themselves in the myths, legends, and sacred tales of medieval England. It’s a chance to connect with a timeless story that has resonated through the centuries and celebrate the rich literary heritage of North Shropshire.”
The reading of “Erkenwald” at Soulton Hall was a journey into the heart of medieval thought and a celebration of a precious literary treasure. It underscored Soulton Hall’s continued commitment to fostering cultural understanding and bringing historic texts to a modern audience in an unforgettable setting.
