A Handmade Christmas at Burton Agnes Hall

This Christmas the Cunliffe-Lister family are looking forward to opening their elizabethan home and providing some festive cheer: some much-needed twinkle and sparkle at the end of a tough year. This will be the house’s first visitor opening since March, and keenly anticipated: the team are busy crafting original festive schemes for every room. The walled gardens and woodland, enjoyed for their beautiful displays year-round, provide the ingredients for this huge creative effort.

Olivia Cunliffe-Lister says: ‘This year more than ever before, we’re focusing on sustainability, employing the skills in our community to create natural, handmade, environmentally conscious craft. Foliage and flowers grown in the walled garden and woodland is used in seasonal arrangements including hydrangea flower head wreaths, helichrysum flower baubles, miniature rosebud rings and balls; with ‘trees’ made of recycled wine bottle corks and others crafted from golden spiral jewellers’ wire. Plants propagated in our greenhouse, such as Christmas cacti in jewel colours, will feature strongly too. Origami and paper decorations are favourites, too, as they’re sustainable and recyclable! We’re particularly looking forward to opening our home for Christmas this year - we’re all especially in need of some joy this Christmas. I so hope that you’ll enjoy, and be inspired by, our ideas’.

Young visitors are very welcome indeed, and can find a handmade felt snowman doll hidden in each room by the Cunliffe-Lister children. The enchanted woodland garden will have a giant candy cane trail, with 24 canes - one for each day of advent - hand carved by the Hall’s joiner hanging in the branches. Each has a different design painted by twelve year old Joss C-L - the challenge is to spot all twenty four!

When dusk falls, Christmas cheer flourishes: with Christmas-light-strewn topiary bushes, the fireplaces glowing warmly and twinkling lights in each room, visitors will be inspired with the abundant joys of Christmas.
