Trereife, pronounced 'Treave', is a beautiful, family -run estate, steeped in Cornish history and with a long-standing association with romantic poetry. Home to the Le Grice family since 1796 and, more recently, the Cornwall Design Festival, the manor house and gardens have been recently restored by the present generation of the family: Tim, Liz, Georgie, Pete and their faithful labradors, Duke and Millie.
Trereife House itself is Grade II* listed, quite predominantly Queen Anne with parts dating back to Elizabethan times. The house is set in stunning countryside just west of Penzance, with a long view across Mount's Bay to St Michael's Mount and a closer view of the fishing village of Newlyn. These are all beyond the modern parterre garden, mature woodland and a small field with horses, which are part of Trereife's grounds. The gardens at Trereife come into their own from as early as February, given the mild winters in West Cornwall.
The tour ends with tea in the dining room, when the owner, who takes most tours, will be pleased to answer any questions and discuss the history of the house further.
