Shaw House is one of the best preserved Elizabethan mansions in England, built by Thomas Dolman in 1581. Over the centuries Shaw House has welcomed royalty, seen action during the Civil War, housed soldiers during World War II and schooled generations of local children.
We have nine stunning rooms available to hire as a unique venue for conferences and meetings and we also offer a variety of celebration drinks receptions, Mrs. Farquhar’s Afternoon Tea and a programme of events and activities throughout the year.
The House is open to the public every weekend and school holiday from 10 February - 30 September 2018.
10 February - 30 September: weekends, 11am to 4pm; school holidays, 10am to 4pm.
Shaw House is ideally situated in tranquil surroundings on the north edge of Newbury, within an hour’s reach of London, Bristol, Oxford and the South Coast, and just five minutes from the M4/A34 junction. Parking is free.
It is also within a leisurely 25 minute walk from Newbury town centre and is accessible by public transport using the Jet Black bus service.

Hold your wedding at historic Shaw House.
Chandos Dining Room
After your wedding ceremony we would be delighted to offer a drinks reception while the happy couple have their photographs taken. Reception drinks are served in the Chandos Dining Room, which is located on the ground floor close to the Ceremony Room and can host up to 50 guests
The Register Office for West Berkshire Council is located on the second floor of Shaw House. All local births and deaths are registered here. Ceremony rooms on the ground floor are a beautiful place to get married and are also used for Baby Naming and Citizenship ceremonies
Little remained of the historic furnishings at the time of restoration, which allows the rooms to be presented with a minimalistic finish – perfect for hosting highly efficient conferences, meetings and seminars. The surroundings may be steeped in history but the facilities are very much set in the 21st century with modern digital and audio visual equipment. We warmly welcome you to Shaw House.
Shaw House can offer school visits during school term time and can be tailored to your needs. If you have a certain area you are covering in the curriculum your visit can be designed to incorporate certain topics and areas of history.
We can offer access to the Exhibition Room with the opportunity to have an activity in one of the adjoining rooms which could be lead by our Learning and Participation Officer and designed for your group. Depending on the occupancy of the House we could provide a tour of some of the rooms and grounds outside.
Each enquiry is dealt with on an individual basis as availability will need to be checked and topics discussed.
