170 years of continual planting by six generations of the same family has created a rich and valuable plant collection for visitors to enjoy at Riverhill.
The gardens are an intriguing mix of historic and traditional planting, with contemporary and quirky twists, making it a fascinating 'must visit' garden for families and garden lovers alike.
The principal features are the Walled Garden, restored in 2011, with sumptuous contemporary grass curves and frothy fountains, Rose Walk, Italianate terraces and Wood Garden.
The Wood Garden displays magnificent colour from carpets of bluebells with a vast array of specimen rhododendrons and azaleas. The gardens also have fantastic views over the Weald of Kent.

A word from the owner
Until World War Two there were eight gardeners, seven men on the home farm and a staff of twelve in the house. Now there is one full time gardener, a team of volunteers and much family participation. Four generations of the family live at Riverhill. We hope you enjoy your visit.
Riverhill is the perfect setting for your quirky and quintessentially English wedding.
A hidden gem (we do only a handful of weddings each year) offering you the opportunity to have both the wedding ceremony and a marquee reception in the beautiful gardens - a fantastic country venue to welcome your friends and families and, should you choose to include them in your big day, even your dogs!
Come to us either after a traditional church ceremony or if you were hoping for a civil ceremony, three separate venues in the Gardens (inside and out!) are now licensed for civil wedding ceremonies
- Our quirky barn
- The Garden Room with it's overhanging gallery
- The Himalayan Hut overlooking the fabulous fountains in the Walled Garden
- The newly-restored and wonderfully romantic 'Summerhouse', nestled on one of the formal terraces beneath the house, with one of the finest views in Kent
Moving on to the reception, the huge terrace lawn (formally the grass tennis courts), with Riverhill House as an elevated backdrop, allows ample room for you to put up even the most elaborate of marquees, with plenty of space outside for your guests to enjoy the delightful surroundings and the magnificent views and perhaps even have a game of croquet!
A photographer's paradise, the historic grounds feature some interesting formal structures and sculptures set against rare specimen shrubs and trees. Informal planting creates both a relaxed and romantic feel to the day along with many 'wild photo' opportunities with the rolling fields, meadows and viewpoints, not to mention the horses and cattle!
Our beautifully restored Garden Room is the perfect setting for one of our famous Riverhill Afternoon Tea parties.
We offer you exclusive hire of the space, seating up to 56 people, and providing a flexible and relaxed base in which to celebrate with friends and family.
We pride ourselves on our decadent Afternoon Tea menu, which includes freshly cut sandwiches, with all the traditional fillings, a generous selection of our sumptuous local cakes and sweet treats and, of course, freshly baked scones, served warm with lashings of Cornish clotted cream and local strawberry jam. All accompanied by our fabulous tea or coffee selection. Why not add bubbles to make it a sparkling afternoon tea?
When you hire the Garden Room we include entry to the gardens as well so you and your guests can work up an appetite exploring or just enjoy the views with a glass of fizz.
