Overview

This remarkably complete brick-built Tudor manor house sits on monastery remains recorded in the Domesday Book.

The H-shaped house has an enormous stone chimney breast. It was built by Robert Audley 1565 of lath and plaster but brick-encased 1645. Home to Sir Charles Caesar and son Julius, master of the rolls.

The original building, then called Repingdon (later Reppington), was a cell of the Augustinian monastery at Repton. It stood on this site in 660 and was referred to in a charter of 1159, recorded in an inventory of the 1st Earl of Clare. It was destroyed in the Danish Wars, but rebuilt in 1172 by Maud, widow of Ranulph, Earl of Chester. The ponds were used by the monks for fishing.

Many works of art on show, including portraits of Henry VIII. Charming gardens, fine views, large ponds, walled gardens.
