Overview

Pentillie Castle (built in 1698) is a family-run B&B and wedding venue set in the middle of the Repton designed woodland gardens on the Cornish bank of the River Tamar.

Since opening in 2009 the Coryton family and their team have specialised in offering the friendliest of welcomes, the most delicious food, the comfiest of beds and the funniest of tours.

The woodland gardens and pathways beckon you to continue your walk just a little bit further, ensuring that those scones, the squashy sofas and the log fires are even more welcoming. Whatever brings you to Pentillie, we will ensure you leave with the best of memories.

Pentillie castle is the most beautiful place ever. The grounds are amazing and the staff are too. My daughter had her wedding there and nothing was too much trouble, we had Pentillie for 3 days over the wedding and I just cannot express how fantastic it was. Would certainly go there again, hopefully soon. Thank you Pentillie.

We got married at Pentillie Castle, it was the best decision we ever made. We decided it was the venue for us as we drove along the beautiful driveway, and we were not disappointed. Nothing was too much trouble, we had the flexibility to make out wedding our own, the staff were attentive and a pleasure to deal with, and we truly had the best day of our lives. I cannot recommend Pentillie enough.

School Visits

Schools and educational groups from across Cornwall and Devon are always very welcome at Pentillie. The Coryton family believe that the Castle’s rich history and wonderful landscape should be shared with local communities. This shared knowledge will be vital to preserving Pentillie’s legacy. As part of any educational visit, school and further education groups will have the opportunity to look at the following:

  • Flora – wide variety of tree, plant and flower species.
  • Fauna – insects, birds and animals (both farmed and wild).
  • Geographical features – including tidal river, promontories, valleys, woodland and parkland.
  • History – including historical buildings such as the mausoleum and kitchen garden, the history of the Castle and Coryton family.

Pentillie Castle's history and features

The Castle was built in 1698 by Sir James Tillie, land agent to the nearby estate of Sir John Coryton. When Sir John mysteriously died aged only 42, Tillie married his widow, joining the two estates and considerably improving his wealth. He had grandiose ideas of himself and commissioned a statue of his likeness to stand outside the Castle.

Before Sir James Tillie passed away, he asked to be interred in a purpose-built mausoleum at Pentillie, so he would be ready for his resurrection – a statue of him still remains in the mausoleum today.

In 1809, the Castle was remodelled into a commanding castle, fit for its location over the Tamar Valley, by William Wilkins.

Today, the estate is managed by the latest generation of the Coryton family, who are keen to preserve the magic of Pentillie for centuries to come, ensuring it remains one of the best Cornish castles to visit. Since taking over the Castle, the family have restored the Mausoleum and uncovered even more of the fascinating history of Sir James Tillie.
