Fun Facts

In 1660 the estate was first purchased by the Rawdon family from the McCartans. A two storey house was then built by the Earl of Moira in 1765. The plaster work on the ceiling of the Lady’s Sitting Room, attributed to Robert West of Dublin, from that period still survives to this day.

In 1798 the Battle of Ballynahinch took place on the outskirts of the estate.


The Carriage Rooms at Montalto is an exclusive private wedding venue set in the stunning County Down countryside. As you drive along the tree lined avenue taking in the views of the surrounding Montalto Estate, it will become apparent that you have arrived somewhere very special indeed.

The lavish settings of The Carriage Rooms at Montalto are truly picture perfect. The venue is licensed for both indoor and outdoor ceremonies with indoor ceremonies taking place in The Sawmill offering distinctive stone walls and illuminated arches. Romantic outdoor ceremonies take place in the beautifully manicured gardens.

Guests can spend the afternoon meandering here with a drink in hand while you take advantage of the wonderful photo opportunities on this 400 acre estate. After this everyone moves into the banquet hall for dinner. With its exposed walls, vaulted ceilings and 19th century beams, this room provides an elegant setting for your sumptuous meal served by our award winning caterer, Yellow Door. A bespoke menu will be created by their expert team working alongside you to make sure that everything is exactly how you imagined it would be. After dinner, you and your guests will move downstairs to dance the night away.

In addition to providing these exceptional venues, we also offer wedding accommodation with nine superbly appointed ensuite double bedrooms in the historic Montalto House.

Montalto House showcases an outstanding example of how the conservation of a building can successfully lead to its reinvention and revival and provide guests with a place to stay like no other. The character of the building is its greatest asset due to its carefully conserved architectural features. The house offers a wonderfully intimate place to stay, accommodating guests in seven exquisitely decorated bedrooms with two additional bedroom suites in the adjoining Courtyard Annex. A fine collection of Irish and European art and antiques furnish this meticulously restored Georgian country house.

Upon arrival, guests are warmly greeted by their knowledgeable and experienced personal host, who will make sure they feel like Lord and Lady of the manor during their stay.
