Overview

Fonmon is one of few medieval castles which are still lived in as a home. Since it was built by the St. John family c1200, it has only changed hands once.

The varied styles of architecture, collections of books, paintings and furniture all tell of its long and distinguished place in Welsh history.

A visit to Fonmon gives unique insight into the different styles of living which have emerged and overlapped as the centuries have passed.

See the small stone ceiling from the 13th-century; portraits and paintings dating from the 16th-century onward; the 17th-century Old Kitchen; the 18th-century gilt; plasterwork Library and mementoes of the 20th-century.

Before or after your tour, enjoy a stroll around the beautiful gardens to see trees from the 19th-century, the walled gardens and watch tower and flower boarders planted by generations of the Boothby family.

A word from the owner

Gardening is a family affair. My eldest sister Penelope was responsible for the creation of the small walled garden and my sister Caroline is a garden designer and is responsible for the overall layout. I myself am also a keen gardener. My daughter Aliki and husband Riaz are all used as free labour, even 3 year old Aian helps!

Fun Facts
  • Fonmon Castle is one of the very few houses that has been continuously occupied as a home since it was built in approximately 1180. Although it has only changed hand once in almost 800 years, the adaptations that have been made as the generations have passed make it virtually unique in style.
  • Colonel Philip Jones who created the old kitchen in the 1650's was a highly influential member of Parliament and close ally of Oliver Cromwell. Then Robert Jones III an extravagant art lover opened up what was a rather gloomy fortified medieval castle and turned it into a distinguished Georgian gentleman's residence filled with fine china, beautiful paintings and rare books.
