Located in the heart of the beautiful Borders countryside, Abbotsford was built by Sir Walter Scott in the 19th-century as a family home, work space and private museum and his interests can be seen in the amazing gothic architecture and interiors jam-packed with fascinating curios, artefacts, books and stories galore.

Train services from Edinburgh operate 7 days a week and takes just under an hour.  Bus services including the ‘Border Weaver’, X62 and 72 stop a short stroll from Abbotsford.

Scott was a great and versatile writer, the author of splendidly long poems, of lyrics & short stories. Abbotsford reflects, almost like no other place, the mind, enthusiasms and preoccupations of the man who built it.

Things to See


Abbotsford offers three different walks, the River Walk, Forest Walk and Scott Walk.  Keep an eye out for Hinse and Maida, Sir Walter Scott’s favourite pet cat and dog, who are here to guide you through the house and grounds at Abbotsford!

Whisky Tasting Evening

Join us at Abbotsford on Thursday 19th September for an exclusive whisky tasting evening in Sir Walter Scott's dining room.  

Take your place at the very same table at which Scott once entertained Turner, Washington Irving and a plethora of other notable guests. Learn about whisky from a Whisky Ambassador with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. And enjoy your drams in the joyful company of other supporters of Scott's magnificent Abbotsford.


Programme for the evening:

Doors open - 6.15pm
Private tour of Abbotsford with our Collections Manager - 6.30pm

Exclusive whisky tasting in Sir Walter Scott's dining room - 7.30pm

This evening is hosted by an ambassador from the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. The Society is an international members' club which offers the world's widest collection of rare and exceptional single cask whiskies to discerning whisky lovers.
