Chawton House wishes to appoint a new Gardener to lead a talented and committed volunteer team in the care of the Chawton House Gardens and Grounds. The Gardener will be responsible for developing and maintaining the gardens and carry out work on the wider estate. Working as part of a small but dedicated staff team, the Gardener will work with colleagues and volunteers to reflect the remarkable collection and story of the Chawton House Estate in the gardens and grounds and create an engaging visitor experience.

Chawton House is an historic house and estate once owned by Jane Austen’s brother Edward Austen Knight and frequented by his sister who lived in a cottage he owned close by. It is home to two significant collections: one of women’s writing (1600 – c.1830) and one of the conjoined remainders of the libraries of the Knight family from Chawton House and Godmersham Park. The House is set in over 100 acres, including a formal garden with a terrace designed by Edwin Lutyens, walled gardens created by Edward Austen Knight, and wilderness that are all open to visitors of Chawton House, and fields and woodlands accessible by public footpaths.

This role is an exciting opportunity for someone with good garden maintenance experience and sound horticultural knowledge. Chawton House is looking for applicants that are familiar with historic or country house gardens, have knowledge of kitchen and rose gardens, and demonstrate a good understanding of project management. A good communicator, applicants should have experience of mowing formal lawns and hedge trimming, and working with interns and/or volunteers.
